High-Level Discussions Between Latvian and Polish Representatives Highlight Defense Innovation and Cross-Border Collaboration
High-level discussions took place at the Polish Embassy in Riga between representatives of Latvia and Poland’s defense and business sectors, marking a new stage of collaboration in the strategically important field of military technologies.
During the meeting, Baltic Photonics and the International Defense Production Manufacturers Association (SAPRA) Chairman of the Board Edgars Zandmanis discussed cooperation opportunities with Lukasz Cudny, Head of the Political and Economic Department of the Polish Embassy, and J. Mārtiņš Skuja, Executive Director of the Polish–Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The discussions focused on promoting the development of innovative military technologies and attracting international investment.
Focus on Technology and Science
SAPRA highlighted its main areas of expertise, with special emphasis on experience in the development of high-precision optical equipment, photonics, and sensor systems. These technologies are becoming increasingly vital, forming the backbone of national defense systems in an era where security and innovation are inseparable.
A key topic of discussion was strengthening collaboration with Latvian universities and research centers. SAPRA has identified six strategic development areas that prioritize academic partnerships, state-of-the-art laboratories, and the involvement of highly qualified specialists. The Polish side echoed this approach, referencing their ongoing cooperation with academic and research institutions to accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge technologies.
Investment Climate and Policy Support
Both sides acknowledged the growing importance of the defense sector—not only from a national security standpoint, but also as a strategic direction for public investment and industrial policy. While both Latvia and Poland have made significant financial commitments toward defense technology development, regulatory barriers continue to pose challenges. SAPRA welcomed the Latvian government’s efforts to reduce these obstacles and emphasized the importance of a more agile and investor-friendly environment that supports both domestic manufacturers and international partners.
Looking Ahead: Regional Platforms and Shared Vision
As the meeting concluded, several forward-looking initiatives were discussed. SAPRA representatives were invited to take part in the upcoming Three Seas Initiative Summit in Warsaw. In turn, SAPRA extended an invitation to Polish stakeholders to participate in the upcoming Drone Summit in Riga — a key regional platform for collaboration in drone systems, optical technologies, and other advanced defense solutions.
Under the leadership of Edgars Zandmanis, Baltic Photonics and SAPRA continue to advance their role as key facilitators of international cooperation at the intersection of science, innovation, and defense. These discussions reflect a shared commitment to building a smarter, more secure, and technologically advanced Europe.
